Description

1879-O Liberty Eagle, XF45
First Post-Civil War New Orleans Issue

1879-O $10 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. The New Orleans Mint ceased operations in the early days of the Civil War, with the last coinage issues struck in 1861. Following a brief episode of Confederate operation, the mint closed doors later in 1861. Operations remained dormant until 1879 when all coinage facilities were required to meet the terms of the Bland-Allison Act. A few gold eagles and double eagles were minted in 1879 while coinage production that year was primarily limited to Morgan dollars. Relatively few of the 1,500 1879-O eagles survive today. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population at 75 to 100 examples in all grades. This lovely, lightly worn greenish-gold example has traces of luster and pleasing surfaces that show only trivial handling marks. Census: 11 in 45, 29 finer (7/24).(Registry values: N2998)
