Low Mintage 1879-O Ten Dollar Rarity, AU58 Preservation

1879-O $10 AU58 PCGS. Simply put, this is a rare coin. The 1879-O was produced to the extent of just 1,500 coins--the second lowest mintage among O-mint Eagles after the 1883-O. AU survivors number no more than seven coins (per Winter, 1992), with only one Mint State example (an MS60 NGC specimen) known between the two major grading services (5/01). Typically abraded for the issue, the surfaces are scuffy in appearance with a few moderate distractions in the obverse field. Both sides retain ample evidence of a prooflike finish, and the devices are boldly defined over even the highest points of the design. We last offered a similarly graded '79-O Eagle as lot 7024 in our February 2001 Signature Sale. That coin was certified by NGC, and it realized $12,363. (NGC ID# 265P, PCGS# 8685)
