Description

1880-O Ten Dollar Gold, MS61
The Usual Variety

1880-O $10 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. One obverse die and two reverse dies were utilized to produce 9,200 gold eagles at the New Orleans Mint in 1880. This High Mintmark variety is the normal die pair encountered on most surviving examples of that mintage. Prominent die lines in the dentils over CA of AMERICA are the outstanding feature of this die. These 1880-O eagles are rarely encountered in Mint State grades with just two dozen such pieces certified at NGC and PCGS, combined. Just three of those submissions are finer than the present sharply struck piece that displays light field-to-device contrast. The orange-gold surfaces are brilliant and lustrous. Census: 5 in 61, 1 finer (6/23).(Registry values: N4719)
