The Eliasberg 1881-O Ten Dollar, MS611881-O $10 MS61 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg Collection (offered as "The United States Gold Coin Collection" at the time). Though the 1982 grade estimate given as AU50 seems harsh to current eyes, the coin's status as one of the finest 1881-O eagles is just as true now as then. The NGC Census Report lists a single coin finer, an MS63, but Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint openly questions such a coin's existence, going so far as to ask whether it is a "data entry error."
Peach-gold surfaces have delicate but warm and sweeping luster, and the strike is decidedly above-average. A line of copper spots crosses the tip of the bust, and scattered marks, including a long abrasion to the left of Liberty's nose, account for the grade. Nonetheless, we expect seasoned Southern gold enthusiasts to be captivated by this coin in an instant.
