Description

1882-CC Ten Dollar, AU55
Better Carson City Issue

1882-CC $10 AU55 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The mintage for this issue is a low 6,764 pieces, and the 1882-CC is comparable in overall rarity to the 1883-CC and is scarcer than the 1884-CC. There are an estimated 200-250 examples known with the majority in lower grades. Choice AU is about as nice as this issue is found and AU58s are rare. This date has remained rare in Uncirculated with just two or three coins known, the finest of which is a single PCGS MS63.

For most collectors, a nice AU55 is a sensible grade for this issue. AU58s typically sell for double the price of an AU55 and there is often not enough of a visual difference to justify this extra cost. The present coin has relatively smooth surfaces with deep orange-gold patina and elements of luster.

Since the beginning of 2010, only six PCGS AU55 examples of this date have sold at auction and this includes a high-end piece that brought a healthy $26,400 in the Admiral Collection (Heritage, 2/2018), lot 4310.
