    Rare 1883-O Ten Dollar, XF45
    Above-Average Surfaces

1883-O $10 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. A single variety is known. The 1883-O ten dollar, from a low mintage of just 800 pieces, is difficult to locate in any grade. Only 35 to 45 pieces are thought to have survived to the present day, mostly in Very Fine and Extremely Fine. This estimate more or less agrees with the 47 coins graded by NGC and PCGS, especially considering that a number of certified pieces are likely resubmissions.
Choice XF examples, such as the coin in this lot, are rare, and About Uncirculated coins are very rare. Only one specimen has been certified Mint State -- an MS61 NGC example.
Both sides display an orange-gold hue laced with subtle hints of soft green. The design elements are relatively well-defined, probably slightly better than the typical example, which is poorly struck. More specifically, a few stars exhibit radials, and none can really be considered "very flat," as usually seen. Most of Liberty's hair is fairly strong, though that above the ear is weak. The reverse is uniformly sharp, which is typically seen. Most of the marks scattered about are minute, with only three or four more moderate-sized. The significant point here is that the surface marks are atypical, and not what gold specialist Douglas Winter (2006) says: "The surfaces are invariably covered with heavy abrasions ... planchet cracks or laminations." Winter further states: "Any piece ... which is not covered with deep marks is extremely desirable and should command a strong premium over a typical unappealing example." This is just such a coin. Census: 3 in 45, 14 finer (12/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2668, PCGS# 8701)
