Description

The Only Certified Mint State 1883-O Eagle

1883-O $10 MS 60 NGC. Much better struck than usual for this rare issue, with good detail noted on the hair and the feathers. The stars, as always, are flat at their centers. Bright and frosty with a bit of reflectiveness in the fields. Quickly identifiable by a small mint-made planchet defect that runs from the base of the throat to atop the second 8 in the date. The balance of the surfaces show marks that are consistent with the grade. This is the only Mint State example of this rarity that has been certified by either of the major services. A very important coin.
Only 800 1883-O eagles were struck, giving this issue the lowest mintage figure of any New Orleans eagle and the third lowest of any Liberty Head eagle, trailing only the 1875 and the 1873. There are an estimated 35-45 coins known, with most of these grading Very Fine to Extremely Fine. In AU grades, there are eight or nine 1883-O eagles extant. The two finest are the presently offered specimen and the PCGS graded Warren Miller: 6421 coin that we sold in October, 1995.
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection; Ex: Heathgate Sale (Superior, 6/97), lot 1547, where it realized $24,200.
