The Single Finest Certified 1885 Liberty Ten Dollar, MS 66 NGC
1885 $10 MS 66 NGC. Produced from 1838-1907, the Liberty eagle series witnessed the production of numerous scarce and rare issues. With an original mintage of 253,527 pieces, the 1885 certainly does not seem like an especially noteworthy date. Indeed, examples of this delivery are easily obtainable in the circulated and average Mint State grades. Above the BU grade level, however, this issue becomes as rare as the lower mintage 1887 (53,680 pieces produced) and 1891 (91,868 pieces produced). NGC and PCGS have seen the following 1885 eagles in grades above the MS 62 level: 32 examples in MS 63; 13 examples in MS 64; one coin in MS 65; and one coin in MS 66 (10/00). The present Gem is, therefore, the finest certified survivor of this underrated and conditionally rare issue. An extraordinary coin regardless of date or Mint, both sides are thickly frosted with a pristine, reddish-gold sheen. There are a few interesting peripheral cracks (as produced) near the lower reverse rim, but the dies were more than capable of striking every feature to the fullest. Advanced gold collectors would be wise to take full advantage of the fleeting opportunity that this lot represents.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 266D, PCGS# 8706, GSID# 9406)
