1890-CC Eagle, MS62+
Frosty Peach-Orange Surfaces
Great Nevada Mint Type Coin

1890-CC $10 MS62+ NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1890-CC has a reputation for being a great type-coin issue. The Nevada mint manufactured 17,500 eagles in 1890, and Rusty Goe (2020) estimates that 550 to 650 of them still survive. That includes 150 to 187 examples in Mint State, though few surpass this esteemed grade level. Goe notes that coins in this grade (without the Plus designation) "typically possess attractive color, have moderate to radiant luster, and are nearly fully struck on their highpoints." That is certainly true here. Indeed, mint frost swirls uninhibited over delightful peach-orange surfaces. Perhaps the only trait standing in the way of a full Select assessment is the presence of a spot of "vault grease" on Liberty's cheek, though to this cataloger's mind it speaks to the coin's originality. Census: 41 in 62 (2 in 62+, 1 in 62 ), 8 finer (11/23).(Registry values: N2998)
