Description

1891-CC Eagle, MS60
FS-501, Repunched Mintmark
First-Generation 'Rattler' Holder

1891-CC/CC $10 FS-501 MS60 PCGS. Variety 3-C. A well-known Cherrypickers' variety with both Cs in the mintmark repunched. A straight die crack through star 12 distinguishes Variety 3-C from Variety 4-C, which instead displays a curved die crack through the first five stars. The 1891-CC might well have been readily found in a first-generation "rattler" holder circa 1989, but over the years most such pieces have been broken out of their holders and resubmitted in the hopes of obtaining a higher grade. This orange-gold Mint State example has a good strike, plentiful luster, and a smattering of small marks.
