Description

1894-S, MS61
Scarcer S-Mint Issue

1894-S $10 MS61 PCGS. The 1894-S eagle is a seldom-seen, low-mintage issue with just 25,000 pieces produced. It is scarce in Uncirculated with virtually every known piece in the MS60 to MS61 grade range, and characterized by scuffy surfaces. The finest known are a small group of MS62s, the last of which to sell at auction brought $12,000 in the ANA Auction (Stack's Bowers, 8/2018), lot 1309.

This piece has been off the market since 2006, and when Harvey Jacobson acquired it, it was regarded as among the finer 1894-S eagles extant. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and the lightly marked yellow-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, with outstanding eye appeal. Population: 12 in 61, 7 finer (1/20).
