    Description

    1899-S Ten Dollar, MS65
    Rarely Encountered So Fine

1899-S $10 MS65 NGC. A remarkable Gem Liberty eagle from the tail end of the 19th century. Despite a mintage of 841,000 pieces, the 1899-S ten is scarce any finer than MS62 and is decidedly rare in MS64. This Gem is an important find and boasts remarkable surface quality. Liberty's portrait and the eagle are razor-sharp, set amid satiny orange-gold luster that cartwheels around largely unabraded surfaces. A couple of tiny ticks near star 6 may be the only obstacle preventing an even finer numeric designation. The last Gem example we offered was in the FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2013), lot 7388, which realized $12,925. We feel the present coin is slightly superior in terms of eye appeal. Census: 4 in 65, 2 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 267L, PCGS# 8744)
