Description

1903-O Eagle, MS64
Only One Finer at PCGS

1903-O $10 MS64 PCGS. Variety 2. The New Orleans Mint was in the news in 1903 due to discussion about its closing, which finally occurred six years later after the Denver Mint was opened. The January 10, 1903 issue of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported:

"The present stock of bullion is all at Philadelphia, and inasmuch as that Mint can easily meet all requirements, Director Roberts has decided not to ship any bullion from there to New Orleans after July 1 next, or to plan for coinage operations at the latter place after that date. This means that the Treasury Department intends to close the New Orleans Mint."

The same newspaper reported in December that the Mint would continue operations. Struck during the unsettling times, this Choice Mint State eagle has brilliant and frosty yellow-gold luster with scattered, trivial marks. Population: 13 in 64, 1 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N2998)
