Description

1903-O Eagle, MS64
Lustrous Anachronism From New Orleans

1903-O $10 MS64 PCGS. Variety 3. The 1 in the date is centered over a dentil, the low O mintmark is repunched on the lower left. The O-mint gold coins of the early 20th century are prized by numismatists as anachronisms, leftovers from the crumbling New Orleans Mint, which opened in 1838 and struck its last gold coins in 1909, the 1909-O half eagles. This 1903-O eagle is from a production exceeding 112,000 pieces and is one of 15 submissions in MS64 at PCGS, with a single MS65 finer (1/14). Superlative orange-gold luster beams from well-struck surfaces that show a few scattered scrapes in concert with the grade.(Registry values: N2998)
