Description

1899-O Ten Dollar Liberty, MS63+
Conditionally Rare CAC Coin

1899-O $10 MS63+ PCGS. CAC. Winter-4. The New Orleans Mint struck 37,047 gold eagles in 1899, most of which went into circulation. Not many years later, gold coinage would mostly leave circulation in the East Coast states in favor of paper gold certificates, but in the 1890s in the South, gold denominations saw commercial use. The 1899-O eagle is elusive in Mint State, especially above MS61. In MS63, it is a rarity, and this is the only Plus-designated coin in the grade at either PCGS or NGC. A sharp strike complements butter-gold mint luster and a soft cartwheel effect, while a few light, scattered marks limit the grade without causing bothersome distraction. PCGS Population: 23 in 63 (1 in 63+), 7 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N2998)
