    1838 Liberty Eagle, AU50
    First Year of Issue
    Important Two-Year Type

1838 $10 AU50 PCGS. This represents the first year of issue for the Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht. The portrait was modified partway through 1839, creating an important two-year type with a distinctive curved bust. According to Bowers in his 2017 A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins, "The first examples intended for circulation were delivered on December 26, 1838, some 6,700 pieces, followed by 500 more on December 31." With only 7,200 1838 eagles manufactured in all, the consensus among researchers is that probably no more than 100 pieces survive, including a majority in well-circulated condition. This relatively high-grade representative shows good central detail and bright, semireflective orange-gold surfaces. Small abrasions and hairlines are expected. Population: 9 in 50, 23 finer (3/20).(Registry values: N4719)
