    Description

    1838 Liberty Eagle, XF40
    First Liberty Ten

1838 $10 XF40 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint resumed coinage of ten dollar gold pieces in 1838 after a 34-year hiatus. A meager mintage of 7,200 pieces was accomplished, making the issue quite elusive in all grades today. This pleasing XF specimen shows some light wear on Liberty's hair and the eagle's wings, but all important detail remains intact. The problem-free orange-gold surfaces show a few minor abrasions, mostly on the obverse. Census: 5 in 40, 42 finer (7/16).
