    1855-S Eagle, Amber-Gold AU50
    Low-Mintage 'Sleeper' Date

1855-S $10 AU50 NGC. In the second year of its existence (the first full year), the San Francisco Mint produced only 9,000 examples of the Liberty Head eagle. Silver quarters and half dollars, along with gold half eagles and double eagles, were struck in far larger quantities, so that the small eagle mintage goes largely unnoticed, and the issue is a bit of a "sleeper" date. This example shows the piquant slanted 5s in the date (as do all) on surfaces that are attractive amber-gold, an original appearance. Both ticks and wear are mostly trivial for the grade, although some cuts appear on the lower reverse rim at 6 o'clock. The large S mintmark is tilted and rather curiously positioned. Census: 4 in 50, 18 finer (7/16).
