Description
1856-S Eagle, MS60
Still Scarce in Uncirculated
1856-S $10 MS60 PCGS. To the surprise of many students of
this series, the rarity of this date in higher grades was not
greatly inflated by the SSCA #2 recovery and there are still
probably not more than 10 Uncirculated 1856-S eagles known. The
finest remains the PCGS MS63 from the December 2000 Christie's sale
that featured highlights from the first recovery of the S.S.
Central America.Only one PCGS MS60 example of this date has ever sold at auction and it brought $14,950 in the Pre-FUN Elite Auction (Superior, 1/2004), lot 945. Two PCGS-certified MS61s have been auctioned; the most recent record is from David Lawrence (4/2018), lot 4367, a coin that brought $12,000.
This bright yellow-gold example shows just a hint of reddish patina. The fields are not quite reflective, but certainly brighter than expected. Lightly abraded and fully struck.
