    1859-O Liberty Ten Dollar, AU58
    Rarest Southern No Motto Issue

1859-O $10 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. From a mintage of 2,300 coins, the 1859-O is the rarest No Motto eagle from the Southern branch mint. Writing in Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, Doug Winter comments: "This is an exceedingly rare coin in AU55 to AU58 and there is just one known in Uncirculated, a remarkable MS62 that was found on the S.S. Republic."

We last offered an example in near-Mint condition in 2005, attesting to the scarcity with which these coins appear for sale. This orange-gold piece has strongly defined interior relief elements -- a characteristic trait. Both sides are abraded, but trivially so, and the only pedigree identifiers include two nicks on the cheek and an area of copper color above the first S in STATES. Census: 3 in 58, 1 finer (1/18).
