    1872-S Ten Dollar, MS60
    The Only Uncirculated Piece at PCGS

    1872-S $10 MS60 PCGS. CAC. The mintage figure for this issue is the highest for any San Francisco eagle since 1857. The 1872-S is reasonably available in grades through AU50 but it becomes scarce at the higher AU levels. It is rare in Uncirculated with just two pieces known: this example, and an NGC MS61 which was last sold for $16,100 in Heritage's 2004 ANA Signature, lot 7467. Luster is far more abundant on this coin than is typical of low-end Mint State eagles, yielding warm peach and yellow-gold hues with hints of lilac. Only non-impactful abrasions are in effect, and a touch of strike softness on Liberty's central hair curls is forgotten as quickly as it is noticed.

    This is among the most important San Francisco eagles in this collection and there is every reason to believe that this is the single finest known 1872-S eagle.
