Description

1886 Ten Dollar, MS64
The Simpson-Hall Coin

1886 $10 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson-Hall. An MS64 coin represents the ultimate grade for this underappreciated issue since there is just one piece graded finer at PCGS, an MS64+. The finest 1886 eagle we have seen was a PCGS/CAC MS64 in an old green label holder that brought a stunning $31,200 in the Admiral Collection (Heritage, 2/2018), lot 4315. Most observers graded this coin an MS65+ or better. That said, the coin does not appear to have graded MS65 or finer; someone owns a very expensive -- albeit very nice -- MS64.

Since the beginning of 2010, only three PCGS MS64 1886 eagles have sold at auction. This coin is one of only seven pieces graded MS64 by PCGS with a single coin finer, the above-cited 64+ (12/19), yet it is relatively affordable. Rich antique-gold luster with yellowish tendencies adorns each side, complementing sharp design elements. Minimal signs of contact are discernible.
