Description

Conditionally Elusive 1839 Half Eagle, MS61 NGC

1839 $5 MS61 NGC. First year of the modified design by Christian Gobrecht. While many first year type coins were saved at the time of issue, there was almost no collector base in this country in 1839 that collected each date and mintmark in a given series. As a result, the survival of coins such as the 1839 Half Eagle was more a matter of chance than design. This is a charming example that has greater eye appeal than its grade would indicate. The green-gold surfaces are lustrous and peppered with only slight abrasions, and the striking details are uncommonly bold, save for the peripheral stars on the obverse.

Several people contacted me who felt similarly about the way the auction was handled. At this point in my career I'm much more concerned with the respectful professionalism in all forms when it comes to my life's work. I truly appreciate your efforts in t
