Description
1839 Half Eagle, MS63
Debut of the Gobrecht Design
1839 $5 MS63 NGC. Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design
first appeared on half eagles in 1839 after its previous appearance
on gold eagles in 1838. The Philadelphia Mint coined 118,143 of
these half eagles in 1839, with 36,000 more struck at Charlotte and
Dahlonega combined. These coins are rarely found in Mint State
grades, and this Select example is an important entry that ranks
among the dozen finest survivors. Despite a few weak stars on the
obverse, this lovely yellow-gold half eagle has a sharp strike and
exceptional eye appeal. It is destined for a world-class Liberty
half eagle collection. Census: 6 in 63, 7 finer (11/21).From The Buxton Collection. (Registry values: P5)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S7, PCGS# 8191, Greysheet# 8883)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
