Description
1839 Liberty Head Half Eagle, MS64
Overlooked One-Year Subtype
1839 $5 MS64 NGC. Christian Gobrecht created the Liberty
Head design that debuted on eagles in 1838, half eagles in 1839,
and quarter eagles in 1840. The design is known by multiple names,
including Braided Hair, Coronet Head, and Liberty Head. The latter
name is the most familiar name today. The 1839 is a one-year subtype of the Liberty Head design with a sharply curved bust line. In the case of branch mint coins, the mintmark is located above the date in 1839, and was moved to the reverse the next year.
This Choice Mint State piece is tied for the finest certified with seven others at NGC and one at PCGS (6/12). Both sides have frosty yellow luster with delicate greenish patina on the devices, especially the obverse. The surfaces are outstanding, and the devices are boldly defined. An extraordinary opportunity.(Registry values: P5)
