Description
1839-C Half Eagle, AU50
Underappreciated One-Year Type Coin
1839-C $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 1, the sole variety for the
year. While the prominent obverse mintmark has always attracted
numismatist's attention, collectors are only beginning to recognize
the importance of the 1839-C half eagle as a one-year type coin. A
scarce issue, from a small mintage of 17,205 pieces, the 1839-C is
known today to the extent of 150-200 examples in all grades. At the
AU level, perhaps 22-30 specimens are extant. As is typical of this
issue, the reverse features a sharper strike than the obverse. The
surfaces show fewer abrasions than the average 1839-C. Census: 9 in
50, 39 finer (2/10).From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P5)
