Description

1839-C Five Dollar Liberty, AU50
One-Year Charlotte Type

1839-C $5 AU50 PCGS. Winter-1. Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Coronet design debuted on the half eagle in 1839. Philadelphia and the branch mints in Charlotte and Dahlonega struck coins that first year, with the Charlotte Mint producing 17,205 pieces. Coinage continued at the North Carolina mint in 1840, but by then using a modified version of the design, and with the mintmark removed to the reverse of the coin below the eagle. Thus, the 1839-C is a one-year type coin for collectors of this Southern gold series.

This AU example will appeal to collectors who appreciate old-time patina. Natural olive-gold surfaces yield hints of amber in the most protected areas, while scattered light abrasions accompany the grade. A thin, old vertical mark in the field behind Liberty's bun will serve as a pedigree marker. Despite light wear, the devices exhibit strong definition, with only some of the usual softness evident on the hair curls around Liberty's brow and on the eagle's talons. Population: 11 in 50, 33 finer (8/25).(Registry values: P5)
