Description
1839-C Five Dollar, AU53
Obverse Mintmark, Ample Luster Remains
A One-Year Design Type
1839-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1839-C half eagle is not
only scarce from its low 17,205-piece mintage, but it is also in
demand from type collectors who value its one-year type status.
Struck from a single die pair, perhaps 150 to 200 pieces survive in
all grades. The obverse mintmark is centered over the left side of
3 in the date. Charlotte gold specialists view the 1839-C as an
essential representative of the five dollar denomination. Prized
for Christian Gobrecht's design, the 1839-C serves as a transition
from the short-lived Classic Head series to the 1840 Liberty Head
motif, with significant differences in the neck truncation and as
well as several less-noticeable variations in Liberty's portrait in
relation to the stars. The mintmark migrates to the reverse
starting with the 1840 issue. This is a bright, green-gold About
Uncirculated example with areas of dusky orange patina around the
margins and sharply defined devices. Light surface abrasions are
grade-consistent and less prominent than often seen. Population: 9
in 53, 22 finer (7/23).(Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S8, PCGS# 8192, Greysheet# 8955)
