Description
1839-C Liberty Half Eagle, MS60
Underrated One-Year Type
1839-C $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 1. The 1839-C Liberty half eagle
represents a one-year design type, as the design of the bust was
slightly altered in 1840,with differences easily seen in the shape
of the truncation and details of the hair. From a mintage of 17,205
pieces, the 1839-C is a scarce issue, and its importance has been
overlooked by nonspecialists in the past. Perhaps 150-200 examples
survive in all grades today, and Mint State specimens are very
rare. The present coin is an attractive MS60 example, with pleasing greenish-gold surfaces that show the minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade. The design elements are well-detailed, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's claws. Vibrant mint luster is evident on both sides and eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 2 in 60, 11 finer (12/14).(Registry values: P5)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S8, PCGS# 8192, Greysheet# 8955)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
