Description

1839-C Half Eagle, MS61
Abundant Eye Appeal

1839-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. The 1839-C half eagle coinage marked the second and last year of the short-lived Obverse Mintmark subtype, one quite popular with collectors. The U.S. branch mints in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dahlonega in northern Georgia were built specifically for the purpose of striking gold coins, and Charlotte in 1839 struck only the quarter eagles and half eagles -- 18,140 and 17,205 pieces, respectively. Most surviving 1839-C fives are well-circulated; this MS61 NGC piece is a pleasing exception, with abundant eye appeal for the grade. The surfaces sport deep orange-gold color and excellent luster with deeper accents of lilac, and the strike is sharp throughout. The grade would be much higher on this coin were it not for a single zigzag mint-made strike-through on Liberty's chin and neck. The reverse is problem-free and high-end for the grade. Census: 4 in 61, 7 finer (11/13).
