    Description

    1839-C Five Dollar, MS61
    Single-Year Obverse Mintmark Type
    Major Rarity in Mint State

1839-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Gobrecht's Liberty Head design was first used on half eagles in 1839, replacing the short-lived Classic Head type. In its second year of operation, the Charlotte Mint manufactured 17,205 of the new Coronet five dollar gold pieces. That was also the only year the facility would impress its mintmark above the date on the obverse, creating a single-year type that remains perennially popular among collectors. In 2008, Doug Winter suggested that 150 to 200 coins survive, including eight to 10 Mint State examples. Ten years later those figures look remarkably accurate. NGC and PCGS report 203 submissions combined, including 23 pieces in Uncirculated condition.

Stars 3 through 7 and the eagle's talons are incomplete, but elsewhere this light yellow-gold Charlotte half eagle is well-defined. That is especially true of the middle hair curls and feathers. Mint luster is bright, if slightly muted, and a scattering of tiny abrasions explains the grade. Census: 6 in 61, 7 finer (2/18).
