Description

1839-C Coronet Five Dollar, MS63
One of the Finest Known

1839-C $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. While not as well-known as the 1838-C, the 1839-C is a one-year type. It employs Gobrecht's first rendition of the Liberty Head design (which was changed significantly in 1840) and has the mintmark placed on the obverse, the only Coronet half eagle to have the obverse mintmark. This example is among the finest known and it shows soft, frosty luster below nice light yellow-gold coloration. There are a few minor ticks on the surfaces, most notably a cluster of shallow marks below the lowest curl of Liberty; the reverse shows a mint-made vertical grease stain behind the eagle's neck and left (facing) wing.
As of the end of 2011, NGC had graded three examples of this date in MS63 with none finer, while PCGS had a population of one in MS63 with two finer. This example holds the all-time auction record by a considerable margin and it is the plate coin in Winter's third edition of Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, 1838-1861. There are an estimated eight to ten pieces known in Uncirculated with the finest being the Miller/Elrod coin, graded MS64 by PCGS.
Ex:Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 3/2005), lot 6941, where it realized $39,100; Baltimore Auction (Bowers and Merena, 3/2010), lot 3739, where it brought $126,500.
