Description

Rare and Important 1839-C Half Eagle, Select Mint State

1839-C $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 1-A. The only variety known. This piece is Die State I, with no die defects on either side. In 1839 the design of the half eagle was changed to feature Gobrecht's new stylization of Liberty. Although this basic type lasted for many decades, noticeable alterations were made in 1840, which makes the 1839 a popular representative not only because it was a first-year issue, but also due to its status as a one-year type. The mintmark was moved to the reverse with the 1840 issue, and the hairbun was slightly modified.
Bright lemon-yellow patina endows the surfaces of this conditionally scarce representative. This issue often features an irregular strike, but the present example is sharply struck throughout save for minor softness on several of the star centrils. Scattered abrasions are entirely trivial and barely affect the flow of the flashy luster. Numerous die polish lines are noted on the obverse, particularly near the date, which explains the impressive luster that enhances the excellent eye appeal.
A mere 17,205 examples were struck, and the 1839-C is seldom seen in grades above Extremely Fine. Garrett and Guth (2006) generously estimate that 30 to 40 coins exist in About Uncirculated, with an even smaller number of Mint State representatives. Two pieces have been certified MS64 by PCGS, one of which exhibits deeply prooflike surfaces, possibly because it was a presentation issue. No specimens have been certified finer than the present piece by NGC, and both services report a combined four pieces at the MS63 level (8/08). This outstanding piece is among the finest known and would make a spectacular addition to any of the finest collections. (Registry values: P5)
