Description
Popular Obverse Mintmark 1839-C Half Eagle
1839-C AU 55. A rare and important coin not only because it is the first Charlotte issue of Christian Gobrecht's Coronet design, but it also has the mintmark on the obverse--an object of enduring interest to collectors. This lustrous AU specimen exhibits some of the usual softness on the obverse stars and hair curls, but is otherwise sharp and without appreciable surface marks. Only a couple of low grade uncirculated '39-C fives are known to exist from its original mintage of 17,205 pieces, so the appearance of a choice about uncirculated coin should merit a condition census rating.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S8, PCGS# 8192, Greysheet# 8955)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
