    Description

    1839-D Five Dollar, AU50
    Obverse Mintmark Style

1839-D $5 AU50 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The mintmark is tilted slightly to the left at the top. The 1838-D and 1839-D half eagles (of different designs, one Classic Head, one Liberty Head) are always popular and highly collectible as examples of the two-year Obverse Mintmark style, and this piece is a particularly nice representative of the Liberty Head variant. The surfaces show the expected high-point wear, marked as a slight color change on surfaces that are largely lustrous yellow-gold. Contact marks are scattered and minor, however, the most obvious a couple of thin scrapes in the obverse fields, away from the focal points, and some short ticks near the date. Much eye appeal persists. Population: 12 in 50, 26 finer (4/13).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25S9, PCGS# 8193)
