Description
High Grade 1839-D Coronet Half Eagle
1839-D $5 AU55 NGC. First year of issue with the Coronet half eagle and this is one of the very few with the mintmark on the obverse. The Dahlonega Mint struck 18,939 of these, most of which were melted or otherwise lost to numismatists in this striking format. Traces of luster in the protected areas and we a shallow mark on the rim of the coin below the final star. The surfaces have rather generous evidence of brief but active circulation, as typically seen for this issue. A look at the combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 19 coins graded this high, and 24 specimens seen finer of this date.(#8193) (Registry values: P4)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S9, PCGS# 8193, Greysheet# 8956)
Weight: 8.36 grams
