Description

1839-D Five Dollar, AU55
Debut Liberty Head Type

1839-D $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The 1839-D half eagle is a distinct one-year type. Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head obverse replaced William Kneass' Classic Head design in this year, but the Liberty portrait is modeled slightly more artistically than is seen on the modified obverse of 1840 and later issues. The 1839-D shows a more pronounced curvature to the neck truncation, and the portrait is better distanced from the surrounding stars. The mintmark is also on the obverse on the '39-D and appears on the reverse on all subsequent issues.

This issue is scarce in all grades with fewer than 225 pieces believed extant. Mint State pieces are rare. The present Choice AU representative displays bold detail with deep orange-gold patina. The surfaces are lightly abraded, as is typical of the issue. Population: 11 in 55, 12 finer (3/16).(Registry values: P4)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S9, PCGS# 8193, Greysheet# 8956)

Weight: 8.36 grams
