Description

1839-D Five Dollar, Choice AU
First and Single-Year Type

1839-D $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The usual variety with the mintmark centered over the area between 39. A number of factors contribute to the perennial popularity of the 1839-D half eagle. It represents the first issue in the Liberty Head half eagle series, and is a distinct, single-year type within that set. The obverse mintmark placement adds a tremendous level of interest. All 1839-D half eagles are scarce. Winter (2013) estimates 200 to 225 pieces remain available from a mintage of 18,939 coins. Only 45 to 50 of those are in AU, and merely four to six examples are known in mint condition.

The obverse stars are nearly full, and strike softness is limited to the hair over Liberty's ear and the bun, both normal occurrences for the issue. The reverse is pinpoint-sharp, including the talons, fletchings, and olive leaves. Softly lustrous, medium yellow-gold surfaces exhibit minimal planchet roughness and few marks of note. A prize for the specialist. Population: 11 in 55, 12 finer (8/16).
