Description

1839-D Half Eagle, AU58
Sharply Struck and Impressive

1839-D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2-A. The 1839-D issue is a distinct and important one-year type as the sole Liberty Head half eagle from the Dahlonega mint facility to bear an obverse mintmark. This is the more common of two known die varieties, with a tilted mintmark that is over 39 in the date. According to Doug Winter, writing in the third edition of his Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: "This date is very rare in About Uncirculated-58 and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated, with just four to six known."
The current offering is a near-Mint coin with impressively sharp strike definition and light green-gold coloration over each side. The piece displays considerable mint luster, and there are only occasional wispy marks noted on the smooth surfaces. High-point friction is minimal. Census: 16 in 58, 4 finer (10/14). (Registry values: P4)
