Description

Important Near-Mint 1839-D Half Eagle

1839-D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2-A. While the difficulty of finding an original, pleasing example of this issue are well-documented, a statistic from the Permanent Auction Archives reinforces the perception: for 2006, of the nine examples offered by Heritage, five were impaired in some fashion, and only one matched the grade of this piece.
The centers are stronger than usual on this example, and the remainder of the piece exhibits pleasing detail. The subtly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces have a hint of honey-orange in the fields. Light friction is present on the highpoints and minor handling marks are noted in the fields, but the overall appearance is cleaner than that of most Dahlonega half eagles. A great representative of this important one-year type. Census: 15 in 58, 5 finer (11/06), though these numbers are doubtless inflated by resubmissions.
