Description

Bright, Lustrous MS61 NGC Condition Census 1839-D Half Eagle

1839-D $5 MS61 NGC. Ex: Ashland City. Variety 2-A. (Per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). An appealing example of this popular one-year type with the obverse mintmark setting it apart from the rest of Christian Gobrecht's long-lived Coronet series. 1839 saw 18,939 Half-Eagles minted in Dahlonega, of which only 125 to 150 are known today. In mint state only five to seven are thought to exist. This 1839 issue--just the second year of Branch Mint production--has lustrous but light wispy fields with pleasing satin contrast near some of the peripheral devices. Though the more common of the year's two varieties according to Winter, in this grade especially it is by no means common; this example is tied for fourth on the Condition Census. Population: 2 in 61, 2 finer (11/03). (#8193) (Registry values: P4)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S9, PCGS# 8193, Greysheet# 8956)
