Description
1839-D $5 VF25 NGC. Variety 1-A, the rarer of the two obverses known for this important issue. The 1839-D and the 1839-C are the only obverse mintmark Liberty half eagle issues, and the portrait of Liberty also differs slightly from later dates. This bright canary-gold representative shows wear throughout the hair, but the eagle's feathers retain rich detail. From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P4)
