Description

Scarce 1840-C Half Eagle, AU55
Mintmark Moved to Reverse

1840-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. From a mintage of 18,992 pieces, the 1840-C five dollar gold piece is one of the scarcest C-mint half eagles. An estimated 125-150 examples are extant in all grades, with perhaps two dozen specimens that would qualify as an AU coin. Most of the AU examples are in the AU50 to AU53 range, with AU55 specimens quite rare. The present coin displays a typical strike for the issue, with more detail present on the upper obverse devices than the lower elements. The only flaw worthy of mention is a short scratch on the reverse, below the E in STATES. Census: 14 in 55, 15 finer (2/10).
