1840-C $5 AU58 NGC. CAC. Variety 2. This luminous near-mint example has an above average strike, and is smooth aside from a solitary pinscratch beneath the lowest arrow shaft. The Charlotte branch produced 18,992 examples of the issue, and most saw considerable circulation. The typical survivor grades just XF40, and few exist in Mint State grades. Census: 9 in 58, 5 finer (2/09).(Registry values: P5)
