Description

1840-C Five Dollar, AU58
Challenging Charlotte Issue

1840-C $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2. Doug Winter considers the 1840-C one of the rarest half eagles produced at the Charlotte Mint. Out of 18,992 pieces struck, only 125 to 150 pieces survive. The present near-Mint example is conditionally rare. Moderate satin luster remains in the fields amid rich orange-gold patina, while devices are sharp and exhibit little high-point wear. Some field chatter is noted, per usual for early Charlotte coinage. Census: 11 in 58 (1 in 58 ), 22 finer (7/22).(Registry values: P5)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25SD, PCGS# 8196, Greysheet# 8957)
