Description

1840-C Five Dollar, AU58
Challenging Charlotte Issue

1840-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 2. The coin ranks among the scarcest Charlotte half eagles in the series in any grade. In near-Mint condition such as this 1840-C, the issue is rare. The mintmark moves to the reverse upon modification of Liberty's portrait for the 1840 half eagles and the remainder of the series. While the Charlotte Mint struggled with strike quality, this near-Mint example is better struck than often seen at Liberty's hair bun and at the eagle's head. Weakness remains at the face curls and the left (facing) wing tip. Granularity in the fields is joined by scattered tiny marks that pepper the open areas on either side. Pleasing original orange-gold and coppery shadings provide visual appeal. Population: 9 in 58, 9 finer (5/24).(Registry values: P5)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25SD, PCGS# 8196, Greysheet# 8957)

Weight: 8.36 grams
