Description

1840-C Five Dollar, MS61
Very Rare in Uncirculated Grades

1840-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. There are two distinct "looks" found on this date. Many 1840-C half eagles are weakly struck and show roughness on the surfaces, especially at the borders. This glossy example is an exception to that rule and it has the look that specialists want to see on this date: sharp details and surfaces that lack any significant areas of porosity. The strike, as mentioned, is far above average for the issue and the color is a nice light reddish-gold. This issue is among the rarest of all Charlotte half eagles and it is significant as the first half eagle from this mint with the mintmark placed on the reverse.
A few decades ago, the 1840-C was essentially unknown in Uncirculated. But at least three or four nice Uncirculated pieces have turned up since then (including the NGC MS64 Pittman coin and the newly discovered PCGS MS63 and MS64+ duo that was first seen in the Heritage 2011 FUN auction). Today, the number of 1840-C half eagles that exist in Uncirculated is more likely in the range of seven to eight pieces.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 4730, where it brought $16,100; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2004), lot 6264, where it sold for $17,825; Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2007, lot 2295, where it realized $20,125 as NGC MS60; FUN Signature (Heritage. 1/2008), lot 3165, unsold.
