Description

1840-C Five Dollar, XF45
Elusive North Carolina Issue

1840-C $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1. About 150 1840-C half eagles are believed extant from a mintage of 18,992 coins, making this one of the most elusive Charlotte Mint five dollar gold pieces in the series. Anything above the Choice XF level is scarce, and Uncirculated coins are essentially unobtainable. This apricot-gold example is in a late die state with a break through the I in AMERICA. The coin shows typical strike definition at the centers, but the upper stars exhibit strong detail. Myriad small marks appear in the fields, and there are a couple of identifying abrasions on Liberty's cheek. Housed in a previous generation blue label holder with barcode on the back. Population: 22 in 45, 55 finer (1/20).
