1840-D $5 Small D--Altered Surfaces--ANACS. AU55 Details. Variety 4-C. A rare variant with a repunched date on the obverse and a die crack running through a small mintmark on the reverse. Luminous orange-gold overall with significant granularity, which ANACS has termed "altered surfaces" but the cataloger for the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection described as "seawater surfaces."
