1840-D Liberty Head Half Eagle, AU Details
Interesting Tall D Variety

1840-D $5 Tall D--Improperly Cleaned--NGC. AU Details. Variety 3-B, with the Tall D mintmark. The mintmark was moved to the reverse on the half eagle in 1840, and a substantial mintage of 22,896 pieces was achieved at the Dahlonega Mint. Perhaps 120-140 examples survive today in all grades. The present coin features a decent strike for a D-mint coin, and the surfaces are only lightly abraded. The original color of this piece has been altered by cleaning, an all- too-common occurrence with this date.
